If you ask anyone what the best dessert in the world is, everyone will have a different response. This is the beginning point for CNN Travel's trip through the world's 50 most famous desserts, curated by pastry chef Jen Rose Smith. Although the podium is foreign-sounding, with South American alfajores in first place, Austrian apfelstrudel, and Turkish baklava in second and third, Italy remains the unseen monarch of the ranking, placing three timeless icons that delight dessert lovers around the world. Sicilian cannoli leads the Italian delegation and ranks ninth overall. Born during the lively events of Palermo's Carnival, CNN is captivated by the contrast between its flaky shell and the smooth sheep's milk ricotta. A bite that, thanks to candied citrus, reflects centuries of Arab influence in the Mediterranean. Gelato drops to twentieth place, but still takes the gold medal in the "freezer dessert" category. The reduced fat level and greater serving temperature compared to standard foreign gelatos are the key to allowing the flavors, from lemon to chocolate, to explode. A seasonal rite all over the world, and an annual tradition for Italians, who have even dedicated a museum to it in Bologna. Finally, Tiramisu takes the stage, ranking 47th. Founded in Treviso in the midst of coffee, mascarpone, and ladyfingers, its name has grown to become a global brand, with success ranging from Umbria to Ulan Bator.
