After being accused of drunk driving, a 55-year-old driver who is a complete teetotaler was acquitted "because the fact does not exist" by the court. The case dates back to March 2022, when the man drove into a ditch in the province of Cremona while trying to avoid two coypu crossing the road. Despite not having consumed alcohol, medical testing at the hospital indicated a blood alcohol level of 1.19 g/l, prompting the instant revocation of his license and consequent loss of his job. After an extensive and expensive diagnostic process conducted by the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan and the Cremona Hospital, the breakthrough was achieved. Doctors determined that the individual has "autobrewery syndrome", also known as intestinal fermentation disease, which is highly rare. This illness, first reported in Japan in 1952, causes certain microbes in the colon to transform eaten carbohydrates into ethanol. That evening, the 55-year-old casually ate pizza with his son. The defense claimed that the Highway Code infraction requires the conscious ingestion of alcohol, which was not the case in this case.
