A forty-year-old American couple's luxurious holiday in Rome turned into a million-euro nightmare. While standing in line at the tax refund counter at Fiumicino Airport three hours before their flight to the United States, the two tourists were distracted, a lapse that cost them a fortune. Two professional thieves formed a line behind them and successfully stole two trolleys that were filled with designer luggage. The carts contained gold, diamonds, Hermès outfits, and luxury chronographs, including a €300,000 Cartier watch and a Rolex Oyster, as well as cash and a €30,000 crocodile purse. The Fiumicino Police Department's swift investigation, which began on June 2, rapidly identified the perpetrators of the large heist owing to video security cameras. The duo, a Roma couple of Bosnian descent in their twenties, left in a camper van towards northern Italy shortly after the robbery. While travelling along the Autostrada del Sole, they allegedly sold a large part of the stolen goods to a fence before continuing towards the Veneto region. Their escape came to an end in Venice, when police cars located them down in a bar after receiving reports of a fight. A search of the camper van yielded only a portion of the necklaces and bracelets, while the costly chronographs may have already been sold on the illicit market in Dubai. The two young lads have been identified and charged with aggravated theft.
