Italy's new Digital Cultural Heritage Map is now online, providing a national service that catalogues and makes accessible the country's digital heritage held by museums, archives, libraries, archaeological parks and cultural institutions. Its primary goal is to draw attention to "legacy digital" (collections that have not yet been incorporated into national standards) and "hidden digital" (resources that are stored locally and have not yet been cataloged). The tool uses an interactive, geolocalized map to allow users to explore digital collections and their relationships with relevant locations and entities; filter by kind, format, license, and owner; and reference full information sheets for each collection. It also functions as a governance tool, providing the Ministry and cultural organizations with organized data on digital heritage. Museums, archives, libraries, and cultural organizations can use a back-office to categorize, describe, and validate their collections, with guided sections on institutional data, digitization, and cataloging.
