Rome –Mario Adinolfi, a well-known journalist and leader of the Popolo della Famiglia (People of the Family) - a conservative political movement inspired by Catholic teachings - has been arrested in Rome by the Guardia di Finanza. The political figure is currently under house arrest, facing serious charges of fraud and tax evasion. The news, first broken by the daily newspaper La Repubblica, has turned a harsh spotlight on the politician's financial dealings.
At the heart of the Rome Prosecutor's complex investigation is "Scommessa Collettiva" (Collective Bet), a private club founded by Adinolfi. According to prosecutors, the venture managed to collect millions of euros from private investors. Members were allegedly promised staggering, above-market returns on sports betting, with guarantees of up to 40% annually alongside protected capital. However, for many of the participants, these promises never materialized, leaving investors empty-handed.
Investigators estimate that the scheme orchestrated by Adinolfi caused financial damages close to five million euros. On top of this, the Guardia di Finanza (Italy's financial police) has tacked on an additional €400,000 in alleged tax evasion. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to fully untangle the club's financial flows.
