The theft of 80 fentanyl vials from Rome's Israelite Hospital pharmacy has aroused serious security concerns at the highest levels of government. A new emergency meeting was conducted today in Palazzo Chigi to assess the situation and plan countermeasures. Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, Health Minister Orazio Schillaci, President of the Conference of the Regions Massimiliano Fedriga, and Lazio Governor Francesco Rocca were among those present at the meeting. They were accompanied by the Commander of the Carabinieri NAS (National Anti-Drug Services Unit), the Director of the Central Anti-Drug Services Directorate (DCSA), and representatives from the Department for Anti-Drug Policies. According to an official release from Palazzo Chigi, the major goal of the discussion was to improve cooperation among all participating institutions. As a result, it has been decided to form a technical committee immediately, with active participation from prominent scientific societies such as the Italian Society of Pharmacology (SIF) and the Italian Society of Anesthesiology. The committee will be tasked with evaluating the implementation of new and more stringent traceability regulations for narcotic drugs, as well as reorganizing the primary and secondary regulations governing the storage requirements for these substances in healthcare facilities. Meanwhile, to reduce the risks linked with the black market, the institutions have agreed to quickly tighten police controls. Local surveillance will be directed primarily by NAS units, which will increase checks and monitoring along the whole production and distribution chain for these sorts of dangerous substances.
