The Carabinieri Special Operations Group (ROS) arrested two suspects in Rome on serious allegations of espionage and unlawful access to computer systems. The primary suspect is a 59-year-old man who was a former non-commissioned officer in the Italian police force and a member of the Italian intelligence branch. In exchange for money, the individual allegedly collected classified information on behalf of an alleged Russian intelligence agent who possesses diplomatic immunity in Italy, according to investigators. The probe, which is being carried out jointly by the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office and the Military Prosecutor's Office, includes five additional people who are being investigated for a variety of offenses ranging from obtaining information about state security to disclosing government secrets. Among them are four active-duty military members who served as informants for the detained former officer. The investigation began in May 2025 and included extensive shadowing, observation, and internet searches, culminating in the participation of the Special inquiry Group. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto took a clear stance on the incident, praising and congratulating the judiciary and the ROS. "There can be no tolerance for those who jeopardize the Republic's security", the minister declared, assuring the Defense Department of complete transparency and cooperation with judicial authorities.
