In Italy, over one-third of all fines issued for violating the Highway Code are associated with speeding. In 2025, the total revenue declared as derived from these fines exceeded €284 million. The information is based on a study of Italian towns' financial statements undertaken by Facile.it, a company that compares, promotes, and brokers insurance, financial products, energy, gas, fiber optic rates, and long-term automobile rentals. Limiting the research to provincial capitals, the top positions are filled by Florence, Bologna, Milan, Padua, and Genoa, which generated income of more than €46 million from fixed and mobile speed cameras, speed cameras, and other detection devices. Extending the analysis to municipalities outside the provincial capitals, the top three are Villapiana (CS), which recorded €6,990,889 in 2025, Fiumicino (RM - €6,977,786), and Galatina (LE), with €5,365,680. Speeding is one of the causes of road accidents, which increase dramatically during the summer months; according to the most recent available data from ISTAT (National Institute of Statistics), more than 48,000 road accidents resulting in personal injuries occurred in June, July, and August of the previous year, accounting for 28% of the total.
