Piero Formenti, president of Confindustria Nautica, announced record numbers at the Maritime Economy Conference in Genoa: an all-time high of €8.6 billion in turnover, more than €13 billion in added value, nearly 168,000 employees, approximately 90% of production destined for export, and global leadership in superyachts, with 568 units under construction out of 1,093 global orders. However, alarms were raised: Turkey, which had been seventh or ninth in the world for large yachts, is now second, and Formenti cautioned that Chinese competition could repeat what happened to the German and French automobile industries. Barbara Amerio (Amer Yacht) further stated that Italy is confronted with a logistics challenge, as the limited space in the country is a hindrance to the exceptional transportation of large manufactured products.
