The summer exodus of Italians onto the roadways is an annual collective ritual that puts the country's logistics system to the test. Forecasts for summer 2026 confirm astounding figures: up to 90% of Italians will stay in the nation for the holidays, with more than 75% travelling completely by car. To ensure the safety of this massive wave of road travelers, the Automobile Club of Italy (ACI), in close collaboration with ANAS (National Roads Authority) and law enforcement, has planned an extraordinary deployment of forces for the "Estate Sicura" (Safe Summer) campaign: a fleet of 2,000 tow trucks will be constantly active along the road network, ready to assist anyone in need. Despite this remarkable organizational effort, the most difficult obstacle remains the human dimension and driving behavior. Although awareness campaigns continue, the number of road fatalities shows no sign of declining because of what has now become a systemic enemy: digital distraction. As Geronimo La Russa, head of the Italian Automobile Club (ACI), stated on the sidelines of the presentation in Rome, smartphones remain the principal source of hazard. Between notifications and messages, the misuse of technology while driving is the true emergency that must be addressed to provide a safe and worry-free travel season for Italians.
