Every July 19th, Italy recalls Paolo Borsellino, the magistrate assassinated by Cosa Nostra in the Via D'Amelio massacre in Palermo on July 19, 1992, along with his five bodyguards. "The massacre", remarked Sergio Mattarella, President of the Republic, "has deeply affected the country's conscience. It represented the conclusion of a subversive scheme that was designed to undermine the freedom of Italians and democratic institutions. Paolo Borsellino paid with his life for his devotion as a magistrate, and with him were killed five state personnel whose names will be forever imprinted in the Republic's memory: Emanuela Loi, Agostino Catalano, Vincenzo Li Muli, Walter Eddie Cosina, and Claudio Traina. Thirty-four years after the massacre, our feelings of solidarity and closeness to the families of all those—men and women of the police force, courts, and institutions—who protected our community from the mafia's disease remain strong. That subversive plan, thanks to their contribution, was defeated". According to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, "July 19th is a date that marks Italy's history. It also marked my own life. Paolo Borsellino left us a legacy made of courage, love for our country and trust in young people". Borsellino is regarded as one of the most influential and prominent leaders in the fight against the Mafia in Italy and around the world.
