In Italy, a ban on the destruction of unsold textiles was also implemented on Sunday. The disposal, incineration, or transfer to a landfill of garments, accessories, and footwear that have never been sold will no longer be a logistical or commercial decision, but a violation of the law. Large companies are subject to the ban immediately, while medium-sized businesses will follow suit in 2030. Small businesses are currently excluded (with an anti-circumvention clause that prohibits any operator, including those who are exempt, from destroying unsold goods in order to circumvent the ban). Major brands such as Chanel have acted ahead of the curve, announcing the end of shredding unsold goods around the world, while in Italy, the Slow Fiber network, which brings together over forty Italian sustainable textile companies, has long been implementing practices that anticipate the spirit of the law by never destroying unsold high-end goods and instead reselling them at reduced prices.
