The body of journalist Luca Esposito, who had recently turned 53, was discovered by firefighters while they were extinguishing a blaze along a road in the municipality of Eboli, near Salerno. The body had been shot and then set on fire. It was initially unidentifiable, but investigators later traced it to a nearby car. The Salerno Prosecutor's Office subsequently identified the owner as Luigi Esposito. Carabinieri also recovered shell casings near the scene, leading investigators to classify the case as a homicide. As for the motive, no theory has been ruled out. Investigators are examining both Esposito's personal life and his professional activities. Although widely known as a sports journalist, reports that he worked for the Regional Environmental Protection Agency (ARPAC) appear to have had no basis. In an official statement, the agency denied ever having had any relationship with him. As a freelance journalist, Esposito had never reported on crime or court cases, beats that might otherwise have pointed to a criminal motive. Instead, he mainly covered sports, following Salernitana and several Serie C clubs. He also worked as a television commentator, contributed to newspapers and wrote opinion pieces. Colleagues and friends remember him as outspoken and someone who never hesitated to stand up for his views.
