Italy aspires to be a European green technology factory. The European Commission has approved Italy's €1.5 billion state assistance scheme to encourage strategic investments aimed at increasing national cleantech production capacity. The funds, available to businesses across the country in the form of direct grants, subsidized loans, or a combination of the two, will fund the development of key decarbonization technologies such as batteries, solar panels, wind turbines, heat pumps, electrolyzers, and carbon capture and storage systems, as well as their key components. The plan will be active until December 31, 2030. "This program will help increase Italy's clean technology production capacity", stated Commission Executive Vice President Teresa Ribera, underlining the complementarity between national aid and European funds. This creates a twin opportunity for Italian industry: it can improve high-value-added manufacturing supply chains while also attracting new investments, reducing Europe's reliance on imported green technologies.
