Forget pasta, pizza, and mandolins. While these are still the major images in the traditional picture of Italy overseas, the industrial reality is very different. Italy is undergoing a quiet but profound technological revolution: according to the Enterprise AI Maturity Index 2026 study done by ServiceNow and ThoughtLab, the peninsula has become Europe's most mature artificial intelligence market, alongside Spain. Over the last year, Italian AI expenditures have increased by 104%, with 63% of enterprises currently employing agentic solutions. However, the transition to complete automation reveals significant structural limitations: just 10% of organizations have successfully created entirely autonomous processes. Many Italian businesses are encumbered by fragmented legacy infrastructures, with 73% of them dealing with data management challenges and 65% lacking plans to reskill their employees. Despite these difficulties, 21% of forward-thinking organizations have already overcome them by incorporating AI into their workflows, resulting in a 160% return on investment and a fivefold gain in productivity. This image depicts an Italy determined to dismantle clichés and propel itself to the pinnacle of innovation.
