To grow, businesses require both innovation and skilled labor, which must be created and maintained locally. If this option is not accessible, they must turn to immigration. Ulrich Zuenelli, head of the Bolzano-based Loacker candy firm, made this statement. The region's unemployment rate is at its lowest point, with 1.8% in Alto Adige and 2.2% in Trentino. Labor is in short supply, and exports fell by 0.4% in Alto Adige and 4.3% in Trentino last year. What can be done? Zuenelli is unambiguous: "We require targeted immigration and the integration of skilled workers. In this context, we must prioritize addressing the housing shortage". What about exports? What is required is the ability to "provide high-value, innovative, and highly distinctive products. Those who can compete on quality and specialization are typically less vulnerable to economic fluctuations". In particular, geographical diversification must be combined with penetration investments in key markets, product innovation, and increased productivity. Last September, the South Tyrolean company opened a new research center, the Loacker Technology Center, the result of a €30 million investment that will employ 120 people and cover over 9,200 square meters. It will help to invent products, advance technology, and promote environmental responsibility. The center will include research and development facilities, as well as a "Creative Kitchen" for culinary experiments. Today, Loacker employs more than 1,000 people, and its products are sold not only in Italy but also in the United States, Saudi Arabia, Israel and China.
