Edoardo Bennato, the eternally rebellious Peter Pan of Italian music, celebrates his 80th birthday on 23 July, fresh from a triumphant performance at Rome's Circus Maximus, 46 years after making history in Italy's stadium concert scene. A pioneering rock singer-songwriter with a rebellious spirit and a dreamer's imagination, Bennato became the first Italian artist to sell out Milan's San Siro Stadium. It was 19 July 1980, and that remarkable year produced another record that still stands: fifteen stadium concerts in a single month. His unique blend of rock, blues and punk, combined with sharp, witty and often provocative lyrics, captivated audiences across generations. Often poking fun at the very idea of the "cantautore", or singer-songwriter, Bennato has always appealed to listeners of all ages. His story begins in the Naples district of Bagnoli and with his mother, who enrolled him and his brothers in music lessons to keep them occupied during the summer holidays. What followed was a career that reads almost like an American success story. After graduating in Architecture in Milan, where he wrote his thesis on a visionary underground railway project for the Phlegraean area, he experienced disappointment when his debut album Non farti cadere le braccia sold only a handful of copies. Refusing to give up, Bennato reinvented himself as a one-man band, performing on the streets of Rome with guitar, harmonica and foot-operated percussion. The breakthrough eventually came with the acclaimed albums Buoni e i cattivi and Burattino senza fili. After drawing inspiration from Pinocchio, Bennato turned to J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan, transforming Peter Pan and Captain Hook into powerful contemporary metaphors in both his songs and later stage musicals. His creative output remains as prolific as ever. Following the recent conclusion of his painting exhibition at Rome's Palazzo delle Esposizioni and the release of his latest single, Ogni settimana, a new album is expected this autumn. He is also composing the official anthem for the 2027 America's Cup in Naples, whose teams will be based in his beloved hometown of Bagnoli.
