Fertitta, U.S. ambassador to Italy, praised the "strong friendship" that Mattarella has consistently shown toward the United States, highlighting the close ties between the two countries. Tributes came from politicians across the political spectrum, reflecting the broad popularity of a president who has served as Italy's head of state for 11 years and is among the longest-serving presidents in the country's republican history, behind only Giorgio Napolitano, Sandro Pertini, and Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
