Molinette Hospital, which is a component of the Città della Salute e della Scienza in Turin, successfully executed an unprecedented surgical procedure. Elena, 67, was able to regain her sight thanks to the University Eye Clinic's team, led by Professor Michele Reibaldi, after more than five years of total blindness caused by a serious car accident. The patient sustained an irreversible injury to her left eye's optic nerve (which precluded function but left the tissue undamaged) as well as significant trauma to her right eye, causing the retina and cornea to be entirely ruined. The surgeons subsequently removed an entire anatomical block from her blind left eye, which included the cornea, sclera, conjunctiva, and, for the first time in the world, the macula (the central part of the retina). This block was subsequently transplanted into her right eye. This biological "transfer" enabled the regeneration of a totally functional eye, regaining her freedom. She was accompanied to the ward by her beloved dog, Joe.
