The unfortunate incident at the Palmiro Togliatti rail station in Rome's Colli Aniene district ended tragically. A 30-year-old Egyptian man died at the Umberto I hospital after eight days of pain. He sustained severe head injuries from a screwdriver during a violent attack. Following the victim's death, the accusation against the attacker—a 31-year-old Gambian citizen already in prison—was legally changed from attempted murder to murder. The spectacular chain of events began Saturday afternoon, July 18. According to authorities' reconstruction, the victim intervened to defend a 28-year-old compatriot who was confronted by the 31-year-old man while attempting to steal his money and cell phone. After a struggle that culminated in the brutal wounding of his friend, the first victim of the robbery, he was able to escape. He later returned and called 911 upon observing the lifeless body of the thirty-year-old. The 28-year-old was treated and discharged from Sandro Pertini Hospital, while the suspect now faces the more serious charge of murder.
