2025 marked a record year for Italy's patent system. According to a report published by the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy, patent applications for industrial inventions totaled 11,996, the largest number in the previous 15 years. This reflects an 18.2% increase over the previous year, which was already up 7.4%. The academic community's contribution was particularly noteworthy: University and public research institutions submitted 594 applications, representing a 25% increase. Taking into account all sorts of submissions (including validations of European patents), the total number of patent filings in 2025 was 32,834. This figure confirms the innovative spirit of Italian enterprises, universities, and research institutions.
