Growth in the private healthcare market is being driven by the challenges that the public healthcare system is currently facing, as well as the aging population and the increased demand for care. According to the Mediobanca Research Area, the top private operators' revenues hit €13.4 billion in 2024, up 5.5% from 2023 and 22% from 2019. Further growth of 3.7% is expected in 2025, led principally by geriatric care (+7.9%), followed by hospital care (+3.9%), diagnostics (+2.8%), and rehabilitation (+2.6%). The data also shows that, compared to the pre-pandemic period, aged care facilities are seeing the most substantial expansion (+25.9%), owing to increased bed occupancy rates and the establishment of new facilities. Private facilities are profitable, whereas public hospitals have significant budget issues. The paper discusses how the aging population will continue to drive up demand for care in the coming decades. The proportion of people over 65 is predicted to increase from 24.5% in 2024 to 34.1% by 2062.
