A research team at the University of Milan-Bicocca has devised a way for converting asbestos—one of the world's most toxic industrial materials, historically connected with fatal lung ailments such as mesothelioma—into a viable ingredient for sustainable production. The research team, led by Michele Mauri, revealed that properly handled asbestos can be transformed into a useful addition for bioplastic manufacture. This discovery gives up the possibility of neutralizing a material outlawed in much of the world but nevertheless found in innumerable buildings and industrial locations, transforming a hazardous environmental burden into a resource for a new sustainable production chain. For Italy, where asbestos-related litigation and remediation have been ongoing for decades, the outcome might represent a commercially feasible disposal alternative while also benefiting the circular economy.
