Renato Vallanzasca will never go back to prison. The Venice Supervisory Court granted the defense's motion to confirm that the former boss of the Comasina Gang's health is incompatible with imprisonment. The 76-year-old former criminal's pending sentence of house arrest is now formally indefinite: he will remain housed at the Opera della Provvidenza Sant'Antonio facility in the province of Padua, a center specializing in the care of Alzheimer's patients and other forms of dementia. The court's decision is based on a recent Constitutional Court decision, which established that in the case of irreversible psychophysical incapacity, it is unnecessary to submit a detained individual to ongoing and periodic health reassessments. Vallanzasca, unable to care for himself, will serve his four life sentences in a nursing facility. Thus concludes the prison sentence of one of the most notorious and merciless figures in Italian crime throughout the 1970s and 1980s. After fifty years in prison, "Bel René"—who is responsible for around seventy armed robberies, four kidnappings, and seven murders—will be permanently housed at the nursing facility to which he was transported about two years ago.
