A theatrical performance instead of a painkiller, an art exhibition to combat anxiety, and a concert to promote psychological well-being: this is the philosophy of "social prescription", a large-scale project being developed by the Tuscany Region in collaboration with Unicoop and family doctors with the goal of using culture as a tool for prevention and health promotion. Several studies have found that cultural and social activities improve physical and mental health. The paradigm is based on foreign experiences: social prescription has long been used in the United Kingdom, and it is well-established in Austria and Northern European countries. The "Culture that Heals" project, advocated by the Region's President, Eugenio Giani, has already been implemented in Lucca.
