Not only does Italy have great art and cuisine, but it also has the highest level of thunderstorm activity in Europe. According to the summer report published by Meteorage, Europe's premier lightning survey provider, the Italian peninsula is still the most afflicted country in Europe for cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, well exceeding France and Spain. Between June 1 and August 31, 2026, 298,341 ground lightning strikes were reported, out of a total of 893,458 across the continent. In addition to the absolute number, Italy has the highest density, with 4.73 ground contact points per square kilometer. The northern areas top the national rankings, with Lombardy leading the way (36,076 strikes), followed by Veneto, while Cuneo in Piedmont is the most hit province. The second half of the summer was the most intense, peaking on August 20 with approximately 20,000 lightning strikes in 24 hours. With supercells, hailstorms, and even occasional tornadoes, Italy's geographical location between the Alps and the Mediterranean makes it one of Europe's most dynamic and lightning-fast meteorological labs.
