In the heart of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, along the route connecting Northern and Southern Italy, a section of the A1 “Autostrada del Sole” motorway became the scene of a dramatic pursuit. A German tourist drove her minivan the wrong way for over 50 kilometers on the mountain stretch between Florence and Bologna, dangerously alternating between the historic "Panoramica" route and the new "Direttissima" slip lanes. The wild journey, which lasted over three-quarters of an hour and featured abrupt U-turns and perilous dodges, caused alarm in the heavy summer traffic. Six Highway Police patrols responded and, in collaboration with the Autostrade per l'Italia surveillance network, managed to surround and stop the car. The woman, who was caught with marijuana in her vehicle and in a profoundly inebriated state, was escorted to Borgo San Lorenzo Hospital. Her vehicle was impounded, her license was immediately suspended, and she was reported to the Florence Prefecture.
