Moments of tremendous shock and anguish in Florence, when Leonardo, an 87-year-old man, had his burial canceled just minutes before it began in the Church of San Francesco and Santa Chiara in Montughi. While relatives and friends waited for the casket to arrive, his son received a phone call informing him of an unbelievable mix-up at the Careggi Hospital morgue: the elderly man's body had been misidentified as that of a woman and was wrongly cremated. When the accident was discovered, Leonardo's body had already been burned. His remains were moved to the Trespiano Crematorium, although the urn still retains the name of the woman for whom the cremation was initially planned. A mistake in the date of death on the man's death certificate adds to the confusion. The family, unable to say their final farewell to their loved one, has hired legal counsel and expects to file both civil and criminal charges to identify who is to blame for the tragedy and to ensure compliance with identification rules. The family has also demanded that the City of Florence intervene to shed light on the events leading up to the dramatic exchange.
