Thirty-seven years after Palombella Rossa (1989), Nanni Moretti returns to Venice with "Succederà questa notte", the first of five Italian films in competition. The film, loosely based on several short stories from Eshkol Nevo's collection "Legami" (Legami) and co-written with Valia Santella and Federica Pontremoli, marks a new sentimental turning point for the director, who explained at a press conference that he wanted to change direction and, for once, imagine a true love story. At the event, Moretti denied any conflict with the Venice Film Festival, claiming that his long absence was purely due to the production schedule of his prior projects, which were never completed by summer. The plot is about Matteo (Louis Garrel), a bookshop, and Greta (Jasmine Trinca), an actress, whose relationship develops over several years through a series of encounters at the wrong time. The story opens in Rome with a strange interaction in which Greta, wearing her wedding gown on her way to her own wedding, stops to play tennis with Matteo, causing him to fall hopelessly in love. Their paths meet again some time later, in San Sebastian, Spain, at a Bruce Springsteen performance, as she is looking for her lost daughter. A third meeting occurs years later in a pub in Rome, when both are deeply involved in their respective family dynamics and committed to other partners. On the outskirts of the presentation, the filmmaker praised his daily work as an exhibitor at the Sacher Cinema in Rome, describing it as a perpetual commitment in direct contact with the audience, before leaving the journalists with his characteristic sardonic joke about Italian politics.
