Pope Leo XIV will travel to France from September 25 to 28, at the invitation of the French President and the Director General of UNESCO, to visit the organization's headquarters in Paris. The trip follows an arduous year for the pontiff, who has recently had to face the situation with the Lefebvrians, which erupted into a schism following the ordination of four bishops against the Holy See's will. The Lefebvrians have extensive roots in France, which is their primary historical, cultural, and demographic stronghold worldwide. Despite the difficulties, Leo XIV urged the Lefebvrians to "go back," while Secretary of State Parolin voiced "great sorrow" but optimism for conversation. The Pope, who marked his first anniversary in May, has made peace the overarching tenet of his teaching, regularly criticizing global conflicts and refocusing his emphasis on migrants.
