The Bank of Italy conducts a sample survey on financial literacy and digital finance abilities among Italian microenterprises on a regular basis. The poll covers a variety of topics, including financial knowledge, actions, and attitudes. The 2025 poll was conducted on a sample of 5,000 enterprises with up to 9 employees, representing the complete range of Italian businesses of this size (about 4.6 million, or almost 95 percent of all Italian businesses). The survey also looks at the usage of digital technologies in corporate processes and the tactics used to manage the physical dangers connected with climate change. The research demonstrates that there is still potential for improvement in financial literacy among microentrepreneurs, despite a minor gain since the 2021 poll. According to the 2025 poll, literacy is higher among microenterprises with higher turnover and those that export; no gender differences occur. Forty-five percent of microentrepreneurs have a high level of financial literacy, while 15 percent have a lower level. Higher financial literacy is linked to more virtuous financial habits and attitudes. Almost all microentrepreneurs frequently evaluate their business's financial performance, and approximately 90 percent keep separate business and personal accounts and forecast profitability. Comparing financial and insurance services is less popular (66%). In terms of financial views, approximately 90% of respondents said they were committed to long-term goals.
