This year, the Italian Physical Society awarded the 2026 "Enzo Boschi" Prize for Geophysics and Earth Sciences to two scholars who are affiliated with the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology: Matteo Scarponi and Davide Zaccagnino. The latter is also a researcher at the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, China. The award recognizes novel and innovative contributions to geophysics and Earth science. Scarponi was noted for his research into the analysis and modeling of multidisciplinary geophysical data, particularly seismological data, whereas Zaccagnino pioneered an interdisciplinary method that included statistical seismology, earthquake physics, fault mechanics, and seismic hazard assessment. The prize, named after geophysicist Enzo Boschi, a vital figure in the establishment and growth of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, is given annually to young researchers who have distinguished themselves through outstanding scientific work. The recognition confirms Italy’s role in international research on earthquakes and seismic risk.
