Despite the worldwide geopolitical instability, the Italian port infrastructure continues to generate income. According to the Port Infographics 2026 report, published by Assoporti and the Intesa Sanpaolo research center, national ports handled over 510 million tons of cargo in 2025, up 3.5% from the previous year, while container throughput increased by about 13 million TEUs, or 7.1%. Passenger traffic is also increasing, with 75 million people, including more than 14 million cruise passengers. The report emphasizes how international tensions—from the Strait of Hormuz, which is seeing a decline in crude oil transits, to the Suez Canal, where traffic is still 48% lower than in 2022—are bringing the Mediterranean back to the center of strategic global routes, with Italy in a favorable position due to its geographic location. However, there are signs of trouble: container traffic fell in the first quarter of 2026, with Trieste particularly vulnerable due to its historical reliance on Asia-Europe routes, whereas Ravenna is showing above-average stability thanks to a traffic mix oriented more toward the short-haul Mediterranean.
