There are more than 6.6 million Italians residing overseas. This expansion is being driven by citizenship gains; last year, 127,000 were obtained abroad, while only 30.3% were born in Italy. This is an ISTAT snapshot of Italians living abroad. According to the Institute of Statistics, there were 6.6 million Italians residing abroad on December 31, 2025, which is approximately 183,000 more than at the beginning of the year. Growth remains slower than in 2024: +2.8% versus +4.6%. More than half of the Italians living abroad reside in Europe, with 34.4% in EU nations and 18.7% in other European countries. An equally big share (34.3%) lives in Central and South America, where the high size of the Italian community is also linked to the acquisition of citizenship by jure sanguinis by descendants of Italian immigrants. Overall, these two main areas account for roughly nine out of every ten Italians living overseas. The percentages in other regions are lower: 7.5% in North America, 2.7% in Oceania, 1.3% in Asia, and 1.1% in Africa. According to the most recent figures, as of December 31, 2024, there were 1,944,000 Italian citizens residing abroad who were born in Italy, accounting for 30.3% of the total.
