The Metropole hotel in Venice has become well-known for its permanent exhibition that mixes collecting with a passion for modern art. "The Metropole collection", says owner and director Gloria Beggiato in an interview with Giornale dell'Arte, "was born from a very simple desire of my parents, Elisabeth and Pierluigi Beggiato: to share beauty with our guests. Our family has always wanted to live surrounded by artifacts that can tell a narrative and become a part of the hotel's experience for guests. It all started in the 1970s, when my father went to a wine auction at Sotheby's and unexpectedly bought some vintage corkscrews. The enthusiasm for collecting arose organically, and, as is frequently the case, a collection stimulated the need to widen the search, resulting in an increasingly rich inheritance of astonishing works and artifacts. The presentation of this collection has evolved throughout time. While the collections were initially dispersed around the hotel's many locations, I felt compelled to organize and prioritize them. This is how some of them, such as our collection of antique fans, became so extensive and important that they occupy an entire floor of the hotel, which we like to call the 'Étage dei Ventagli’. The Metropole has often been referred to as a museum of ornamental arts, which I think is a lovely way to describe its journey. Today, each room contains works and artifacts that convey a story and contribute to a sense of discovery and amazement throughout each visit". The next exhibition will be in September with "Ethereal Presence", an exhibition by Jaume Plensa directed by James Putnam in partnership with the Gervasuti Foundation and included in the official program of Venice Glass Week 2026. The interaction between modern art, glass, and the Metropole's identity will be a constant thread throughout the exhibition.
