Pope Leo XIV has officially revoked the Motu Proprio "Un futuro sostenibile" issued by Pope Francis in 2021, which had temporarily slashed the salaries of cardinals, department heads, and religious clerics due to the economic pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Following consultations with the Secretariat for Economy, the current Pontiff determined that these emergency containment measures - which included a 10% reduction for cardinals of the Curia - can now be lifted. While past deductions and the two-year seniority freeze applied during the decree's active years will not be refunded, Pope Leo expressed confidence that Vatican institutions will continue ensuring economic sustainability moving forward through alternative means.
