The Italian film industry is caught in a paradoxical boom: production has doubled over the past three years, but the market is struggling to absorb the influx. A recent report by Rome Business School experts Francesco Baldi and Valerio Mancini highlights that new releases jumped from 501 in 2019 to 1,002 in 2025. Consequently, average earnings per title collapsed from 1.3 million euros to under 500,000 euros. While total box office revenues remain below pre-pandemic levels, Italian films have gained ground, capturing 32.7% of the market in 2025 (up from 21.2% in 2019). However, the real scarce resource today is viewer attention in a limitless digital landscape. As public funding contracts to 606 million euros for 2026, private streaming giants have stepped in, investing 344.4 million euros in independent European works. The challenge for Italian filmmakers moving forward will be balancing digital integration with the protection of their creative autonomy.
