MFE-MediaForEurope, the holding company of Italy's Mediaset, which is controlled by the Berlusconi family, has risen to ninth place in the global media and entertainment sector and is the second-largest European group after Canal+, following the acquisition of Germany's Prosieben. This is proven by a Mediobanca report, which averages the revenues of the major worldwide operators while accounting for recent mergers and acquisitions. In the previous report, dated 2024, MFE was ranked fifteenth, with sales primarily from Italy and Spain (€2.8 billion). This does not change the fact that the European landscape remains highly skewed toward American players, especially significant OTTs. In 2025, the top 25 global groups in the sector generated a combined revenue of €362.8 billion, a 2.8% increase from 2024 and a 6.8% increase from 2022. US entertainment companies generated 84% of this revenue. Six of the top ten are American, led by Comcast; one is Japanese (Sony Pictures); and only three are European (Canal+, MFE, RTL). However, the discrepancy is enormous: Comcast's $99.6 billion versus Fox's $13.9 billion, while European revenues are substantially lower (Canal+ $8.1 billion, MFE with ProSieben $6.5 billion). In between are new competitors such as Netflix ($38.5 billion), nearly all of Amazon (which does not reveal its entertainment specifics), and YouTube, which is not part of the business but is rapidly competing with it.
