The Italian Football Federation (FIGC), the governing body of Italian football and the national team, may be placed under special administration after the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), which oversees the country's sports federations, raised doubts about Giovanni Malagò's election as president. Malagò, who was elected president in June this year, did not register with the FIGC when submitting his candidacy, which is a requirement for federal candidates, according to Attorney General Ugo Taucer. CONI president Luciano Buonfiglio explained: “In light of what was acknowledged by Prosecutor General Ugo Taucer himself, it has been conclusively established that Dr Malagò was not registered at the time his candidacy was submitted. If the FIGC intended to disregard this subjective criteria, it should have done so expressly, as judges and auditors do". Buonfiglio continued, "Prosecutor Taucer reiterated that possession of a valid membership card must be one of the requirements for eligibility or candidacy for members of federal bodies, whether elected or appointed". "Although having publicly endorsed the CONI's essential principles, the FIGC has not concretely applied them to the matter at hand, notably in terms of correctly interpreting the membership criterion. These key principles appear to have been breached", he stated. Former FIGC president Gabriele Gravina declared the decision "absurd" in response to the possibility of a special administration. "The credibility of our football must be defended from repeated attempts to invade the field, which undermine its autonomy and cyclically return," he stated, alluding to the case of the registration of his successor Giovanni Malagò. "It is absurd to even consider a special administration of the FIGC for the reasons I have read. We need more respect for the Football Federation, its president Malagò, and its members". The final decision now falls to the CONI National Council, which will decide whether to proceed with the formation of a special administration. Any decision will be taken after the Italy-Turkey game on October 5th, to avoid disrupting the national team's new cycle and Roberto Mancini's Nations League debut.
