Around 14.9% of women aged 16 to 75 having experienced physical or sexual violence before the age of 16: 15.3% of Italian women, or over three million, and 11.4% of foreign women, or more than 244,000. The majority of the violence was carried out by friends or family members. This is according to the "Violence against Women from Childhood to Adulthood - Year 2025" report by the Italian National Institute of Statistics, ISTAT. Physical violence affects almost the same percentages of both populations (9.2% among Italian women and 9.6% among foreign women), while sexual violence is more common among Italian women (8.2% versus 3.4%), who, as young women, are more likely to face sexual harassment than foreign women. The analysis emphasizes that the perpetrators of this violence are primarily individuals who are acquainted with the victim. Indeed, 13.5% of Italian women and 11.2% of foreign women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence by at least one known person (including family members and relatives), whereas the figures for strangers are 2.1% and 0.6%, respectively. Among known people, parents play an important role, as reported by 3.9% of Italian women and 4.3% of foreign women, notably the father or stepfather (2.7% and 3.7% respectively). Other family members, friends, close acquaintances, and other figures, such as teachers, healthcare workers, or clergy, appear at lower rates. The majority of sexual abuse occurs between the ages of 11 and 16, however 8.2% of Italian victims report their first occurrence before the age of six.
