The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) could soon face temporary administration by the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) due to severe violations of sports regulations by its governing bodies. At the center of the storm is Giovanni Malagò, whose candidacy for the FIGC presidency lacked the mandatory club membership required by Article 29 of the federal statutes.
The procedure requires approval from both the CONI executive board and its national council. If enacted, Malagò will temporarily step down pending new elections, with CONI Secretary General Carlo Mornati lined up as commissioner and former Milan star Demetrio Albertini reportedly slated as sub-commissioner for sports affairs. While Malagò weighs legal appeals or a potential re-run once properly registered, internal political friction grows as Serie A clubs express frustration over their diminished influence and past technical decisions. Nonetheless, current national team staff remain unaffected for now as the federation steers toward a transitional phase.
