Museums, archeological sites, and monuments in Italy are experiencing rapid growth: in 2025, they exceeded 140 million admissions, the greatest level in recent years and surpassing pre-pandemic levels. In 2025, 140.8 million people visited Italy's 4,677 public museums and cultural institutes. This is according to preliminary statistics given by Istat, which indicates a 30.5% increase from 2022 and an 8.4% increase from 2019, the year preceding Covid. Visitor flows remain concentrated in specific areas. Despite having fewer than a quarter of the examined facilities, Lazio, Tuscany, and Campania combined for more than 70.4 million admissions, accounting for 50.1% of the national total. Lazio ranks first with 35.2 million visits, followed by Tuscany (20.7 million) and Campania (14.5 million). State-run institutions are essential: despite accounting for only 9.8% of the total, they attract 44.5% of visitors, with an average of 136,000 admissions per site, as opposed to 18,500 for non-state institutions. Museums, galleries, and collections continue to be the most popular, but archeological sites and parks remain the most appealing in terms of facilities, with over 29 million visits. Nearly half of the population is foreign-born, accounting for 45.2% of the total and 57.8% in Lazio. More than four out of ten institutions provide admission at no cost, while the remaining 58% necessitate access fees.
