At the IAA Transportation in Hannover, China's BYD showcased what it considers the most comprehensive zero-emission transport range ever provided in Europe, with the ETT 44 as its flagship. Alongside trucks, the Chinese company displayed tractors, vans, and yard tractors covering the complete 3.5 to 44-ton range. Sales in Europe will begin in 2027, but the most significant move is political: BYD intends to produce everything it sells on the continent locally, replicating the strategy it has already implemented with heavy-duty vehicles to avoid the tariffs that European manufacturers are demanding be extended to Chinese trucks. For Italy, the stakes are huge. Iveco, one of the few remaining major European manufacturers of industrial vehicles, is already under competitive pressure in the heavy-duty electric sector and has its headquarters and factories in Italy (in Suzzara, Brescia, and Foggia). BYD's aggressive entry, which leverages its low prices and advanced charging technology, risks eroding market share in the most profitable segment: long-haul transport. At the same time, if BYD's projected production location were to materialize in Italy, it could translate into additional investments and jobs in components and industrial logistics. However, the infrastructure issue persists: a megawatt charging network is still almost non-existent on Italian highways, and without it, electrification of domestic heavy-duty transportation risks remaining purely theoretical.
