Artificial intelligence is already having a huge impact in Italian hospitals. Deep learning algorithms help radiologists analyze X-rays, CT images, and MRIs, which reduces reporting time and improves the ability to detect small tumors. Early cancer diagnosis greatly boosts survival chances and lowers treatment costs as compared to late diagnosis. AI-assisted telemonitoring has already dramatically decreased recurring hospitalizations for heart failure in the monitoring of chronic conditions—a critical issue in a country with nearly a quarter of the population over 65. Significant concrete projects are already underway: at the Sant'Orsola Hospital in Bologna, AI aids in the early detection of lung nodules; Sphinks, an algorithm developed by Italian researchers in the United States, uses machine learning to build personalized cancer therapies; and at the Molinette Hospital in Turin, AI aids liver surgery by measuring resection margins in real-time. Added to this is the Telemo project, established by the CNR of Pisa with the Tuscany Region, aiming to deliver melanoma screening even to places without immediate access to a dermatologist.
