Filippo Ganna secured the Italian cycling team's first medal at the UCI World Championships in Montreal, Canada, powering his way to a brilliant silver medal in the individual time trial after an impressive, race-long charge.
The Italian powerhouse faced a steep uphill battle early on: at the first time check, Ganna sat in tenth place, trailing Belgian powerhouse Remco Evenepoel - who quickly set a blistering pace toward victory - by more than twenty seconds. Ganna’s fierce comeback took shape in the middle sectors of the course, climbing to fourth at the second intermediate check and vaulting into second place by the 29.8-kilometer mark. He locked down the position all the way to the finish line, clocking a time of 45'50.44" to finish 57.31 seconds behind Evenepoel, while holding off France's Paul Seixas by 15.73 seconds for the silver. Fellow Italian Mattia Cattaneo finished sixteenth.
Reflecting on his performance, the Paris 2024 Olympic silver medalist shared: "This was perhaps my best time trial ever, I have no regrets. That’s sports, all credit to Remco, who once again proved what an incredible talent he is." In the women's event, Elisa Longo Borghini finished fourth, with teammate Vittoria Guazzini taking tenth.
