The European Space Agency (ESA) has granted Leonardo a study contract to delineate the architecture of the EU Earth Observation Governmental Service (EOGS). The effort intends to improve satellite data management to help the European Union achieve strategic autonomy, security, and defense. The project, funded by the European Commission through the Financial Framework Partnership Agreement (FFPA), is part of the ERS-EO (European Resilience from Space for Earth Observation) preparatory activities and will evaluate various architectural options before the service is implemented. Leonardo will lead the initiative by coordinating the experience and technology of the entire Space Alliance, which includes the joint ventures Telespazio, Thales Alenia Space, and e-GEOS, as well as a network of European partners. The goal is to create a sovereign, resilient, and federated end-to-end structure capable of spanning the full value chain, from space platforms and sensors to ground infrastructure, data processing, and final service delivery. Starting with the real demands of institutional users, the study will conduct a gap analysis to assess present infrastructure and identify the best options in terms of performance, reaction times, and economic sustainability, promoting the integration of national, European, and commercial resources.
