On Sunday, September 20, after the Angelus prayer, Leo XIV expressed serious worry over Somalia's severe humanitarian crisis. In the African country, the combination of armed conflict and extreme weather occurrences has put millions of people, mainly women and children, in extremely dangerous situations. Somalia is experiencing a lengthy drought, putting about 6 million people at risk of acute food insecurity—a statistic that has doubled since the start of 2025. The effects of foreign wars on fuel and fertilizer costs exacerbate an already precarious situation. The Pontiff then made an emotional appeal to the international community for prompt and substantial help. Addressing the faithful at St. Peter's Square, the Pope bestowed a benediction on the town of Pescantina (Verona), which had assembled around a monument to former World War II internees. This provided an opportunity to reassert the significance of historical memory as a crucial guide for avoiding repeating the catastrophic mistakes of the past. Finally, the Holy Father greeted the groups of pilgrims who had come to Rome, including the Polish faithful from the Diocese of Toruń, the Slovak families associated with the March for Life, the Jesuit Fathers at the start of the new academic year, and the representatives of the Roman parish of the Holy Family of Nazareth.
