Genoa has a new location for maritime training: the Italian Merchant Marine Academy has established its headquarters in the restored Palazzo Tabarca, located in the heart of the old port, adjacent to the Galata Museo del Mare. The three-storey building covers around 4,800 square metres and has been assigned by the City of Genoa to the Foundation under a nine-year renewable agreement. Founded in 2005, the Academy has grown to become Italy's largest ITS (Higher Technical Institute) dedicated to sustainable mobility, training senior technicians for the maritime, port, and logistics sectors, including deck and engine officers, as well as logistics, railroad, onboard hospitality, and multimedia technology professionals. On the previous Graduation Day, 209 new maritime technicians from 14 Italian regions graduated. The showpiece of the new facility is the naval simulation center, which was created in conjunction with Cetena (Fincantieri Group). This technology will transform the Genoa center into one of the most advanced public training facilities in the Mediterranean, suited for individual as well as group training. The complex will also include student housing and offices, reinforcing the Academy's relationship with the World Maritime University in Malmö and its international mission to train future maritime workers.
