In July 2026, sports betting in Italy totaled €1.49 billion, up 4.64% from the previous month and 28.14% year on year. This reinforces a rising trend that has been underway for months, fueled by the return of the sports calendar following the summer break and the aftermath of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, there are numerous more variables that contribute to this headline-grabbing record. Among these is actual player spending, or the difference between wagers and winnings. In betting terminology, this is referred to as GGR, or Gross Gaming Revenue. In July 2026, player spending increased to €211.95 million, up 20.19% from €176.3 million in June, a growth rate more than five times that of wagers alone. Fixed-odds sports betting generated €12.26 billion in turnover during the first half of 2026, which spans from January to July. This figure represents a 13.3% increase from the same period in 2025, while player expenditure increased by 2.9% during the same period.
