Four years after her death, Monica Vitti remains an enduring icon of Italian cinema, chosen as the official face of the 2026 Rome Film Fest. The chosen image, captured by photographer Sergio Strizzi, features Vitti on the set of Michelangelo Antonioni’s masterpiece “L'eclisse”, which won the Jury Special Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1962. The photo showcases the ironic yet melancholic expression of the great Roman diva, who starred in Antonioni's famed "tetralogy of incommunicability." Vitti portrayed the tormented Claudia in “L'avventura” (1960), the temptress Valentina in “La notte” (1961), the mysterious and discontented Vittoria in “L'eclisse” (1962), and the neurotic Giuliana in Red Desert. These legendary roles propelled an extraordinary career that earned her three Silver Ribbons, twelve Golden Globes, a lifetime achievement Ciak d'oro, a Golden Lion at Venice, and a Silver Bear at the Berlinale. Marking 95 years since her birth, the Rome Film Fest - scheduled from October 13 to 25 at the Auditorium Parco della Musica - will pay tribute to the beloved actress. The last female symbol of Italian cinema chosen to represent the festival was Anna Magnani in 2023.
